Moving is definitely low on the list of enjoyable activities for most people. Having to move with short notice is even lower on that list and can send you into a downright panic. The prospect of getting every single one of your belongings out of your residence and into storage or a new living space is without a doubt stressful.
Follow these tips for a smooth move-out when time is not on your side.
Create a master task list
Don’t leave it up to your overwhelmed brain to keep track of everything that needs to get done. Utilize an app, planner, or just an old-fashioned piece of paper to detail all of your “to-do” activities. Once you have some structure, it will be easier to accomplish tasks one by one.
First, brain dump literally everything you can think of before narrowing the list down further. From obtaining moving boxes to changing your address with the post office, jot down anything that comes to mind.
From there, categorize your list into priority levels. High priority items need to get done first, and the lowest priority items have some wiggle room. This will help keep your tasks in chronological order and keep you on track. Make sure each task has a final deadline next to it so you don’t fall behind.
Get rid of anything you don’t need
Instead of taking the time to pack up every single item in your residence, get rid of any junk or items you haven’t used in a long time. This could include clothing (we all have a five-year-old shirt we’ve worn once in our closets), movies, kitchen tools/appliances, office clutter, old furniture, etc.
It’s definitely easier to pack up less on a tight deadline than to bring everything with you. If it’s not essential, don’t bring it!
Establish a packing system
There’s nothing worse than going to unpack boxes at your new place and having no idea what’s in them. Utilize a system that makes packing and unpacking a breeze when you need to move in a pinch.
- Pack up one room at a time
- Use specific colors for each room (example: red tape or red marker for the kitchen, green for the bathrooms, etc.)
- Write the room on every side of the box for easy visibility
- On the box, make a bullet point list of what is inside
- Use bubble wrap to protect fragile items
- Keep hangers on your clothes for easy unpacking into closets
- Mark appropriate boxes as “fragile” to prevent accidental damage
You may have another organization system that you prefer to use, but the important part is just being consistent. No matter how you organize your belongings, keep it the same for everything.

Consider hiring help
Whether you need assistance packing items up or a moving service to get boxes and furniture from point A to point B, hiring help when needing to move quickly can be a worthwhile investment. Even though you will incur costs this way, the stress relief may be well worth it in the end.
If you do choose to hire help, get quotes and read reviews online before paying a company any of your hard-earned money. Make sure they have liability insurance in case any property is accidentally damaged.
If you can’t afford to hire a moving service, recruit the help of friends and family to aid your quick move-out. Host a “moving party” with food and beverages where everyone can work together and get a free lunch on you.
And most importantly, don’t panic! By utilizing these tips and tricks to a quick move, you’ll be out in no time with as few headaches as possible.
